October is one of the best months to visit Seoul.
The exhausting summer heat has usually faded, the air becomes cooler, and autumn colors begin appearing across the city. You can walk around royal palaces without sweating through your clothes, hike on Namsan or Bukhansan, and spend an evening beside the Hangang River without the heavy humidity of July and August.
However, October weather in Seoul can also surprise first-time visitors.
A sunny afternoon may feel warm enough for a short-sleeved shirt, while the same evening can suddenly feel chilly—especially near the Hangang River or on top of Namsan. The beginning and end of the month can also feel like two different seasons.
So, what is Seoul really like in October? What should you wear, when can you see fall foliage, and what should you know before packing?
As a certified tour guide who regularly walks around Seoul with international visitors, here is my practical guide to visiting Seoul in October 2026.
| Seoul cityscape under a clear autumn sky in October |
Yes. For most travelers, October is one of the most comfortable times of the year to explore Seoul.
The weather is generally cooler and drier than summer, making October ideal for walking around large attractions such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, Namsan, and the Hangang parks.
It is also a great month for travelers who enjoy combining city sightseeing with nature. Seoul has mountains, palace gardens, lakes, urban forests, and tree-lined roads, so you do not necessarily have to leave the city to experience the Korean autumn.
October is especially good for:
Walking tours and outdoor sightseeing
Palace visits and hanbok experiences
Hiking on Namsan or Bukhansan
Picnics and cycling beside the Hangang River
Autumn foliage photography
Local festivals and cultural events
Exploring traditional neighborhoods on foot
The main disadvantages are larger weekend crowds at famous foliage spots and noticeable temperature differences between day and night.
October is a transition month between Korea’s warm early autumn and its much cooler late-autumn weather.
At the beginning of October, daytime weather may still feel pleasantly warm. By the final week, mornings and evenings can feel cold enough to require a proper jacket.
Instead of thinking about one average October temperature, it is more useful to divide the month into three periods.
Early October often feels mild during the day. A short-sleeved shirt may be comfortable when the sun is out, but carrying a light jacket is still a good idea.
The trees around central Seoul may remain mostly green, although the first signs of yellow and orange begin appearing in cooler or higher areas.
By the middle of the month, Seoul usually feels more clearly like autumn. Long sleeves, light sweaters, and thin jackets become more useful, particularly in the morning and after sunset.
This is an excellent period for long walks, palace visits, and outdoor cafés. The weather is cooler, but generally not cold enough to make sightseeing uncomfortable.
Late October can feel considerably cooler, especially after dark. Travelers from tropical or warm countries may find the evenings colder than expected.
This is also when autumn colors become more noticeable around Seoul. Mountain areas can change earlier, while city parks, palace grounds, and ginkgo-lined streets may continue developing their colors into early November.
Weather patterns are never identical every year, so check the short-term forecast shortly before your trip rather than relying entirely on monthly averages.
| Recommended layered clothing for Seoul weather in October |
The safest answer is simple: dress in layers.
You do not need to fill your suitcase with heavy winter clothing, but relying on only T-shirts can leave you uncomfortable in the evening.
A practical October outfit would include:
A short-sleeved or long-sleeved base layer
A light sweater, cardigan, or sweatshirt
A light jacket that is easy to carry
Long pants or jeans
Comfortable walking shoes
A slightly warmer outer layer for late October
If you are visiting in early October, a T-shirt with a light jacket may be enough on many days. For mid-to-late October, long sleeves and a jacket are the safer combination.
Travelers who are accustomed to tropical climates may want an extra sweater or scarf. Someone from Canada or Northern Europe may find the same weather relatively mild. How cold Seoul feels depends greatly on what climate your body is used to.
Usually, a heavy winter coat is unnecessary in October.
However, a light padded jacket can be useful near the end of the month if you are sensitive to cold or plan to stay outdoors late at night.
Wind can make exposed places such as N Seoul Tower, the Hangang River, and mountain trails feel colder than street-level neighborhoods.
This is more important than trying to look perfectly fashionable.
Many popular Seoul itineraries involve far more walking than visitors expect. Palace courtyards are large, Bukchon has hills, subway stations can involve long transfers, and Namsan requires uphill walking even if you use transportation for part of the journey.
Choose shoes that you can comfortably wear for several hours. October is ideal for exploring Seoul on foot—but only if your feet cooperate.
One of the most common misunderstandings is that the entire city turns red and yellow as soon as October begins.
It does not happen all at once.
Higher and cooler places generally change first. Mountain areas such as Bukhansan may show autumn colors before lower city parks and streets. Within central Seoul, the strongest colors often appear from late October into early November, but the exact timing depends on temperature, rain, and wind.
Strong rain or wind can also bring leaves down quickly, so no forecast can guarantee one perfect foliage day.

It covers six different choices, including Changdeokgung Palace, Namsan, Deoksugung Stone Wall Road, Seoul Forest, Bukhansan, and Seokchon Lake.

Changdeokgung is particularly beautiful in autumn because its architecture follows the natural landscape. The Secret Garden combines traditional pavilions, ponds, hills, and old trees.
Reservations and admission arrangements for the Secret Garden may differ from general palace entry, so check the current system before visiting.
Namsan offers a combination that few places can match: wooded paths, autumn scenery, panoramic views, and the city lights of Seoul.
My favorite time to visit is later in the afternoon. You can enjoy the changing colors before sunset and then watch the city light up after dark.
If you would prefer to experience the area with a local guide, my small-group tour combines Namsan and N Seoul Tower with the streets, food, and nighttime atmosphere of Myeongdong.

This is an easy choice for travelers who do not want a difficult hike.
The historic stone wall, yellow ginkgo leaves, museums, cafés, and nearby modern buildings create one of Seoul’s most atmospheric autumn walks. It is also conveniently located near City Hall Station.
Seoul Forest is where you can slow down and experience a more local side of the city.
After walking through the park, continue into nearby Seongsu-dong for cafés, pop-up stores, fashion, and converted industrial spaces.

October is one of the best times to walk, cycle, or have a picnic beside the Hangang River.
The 2026 Hangang River Festival: Fall is scheduled for October 17–25. Specific programs and conditions can change, so check the latest official information before attending.
Even without a festival, parks such as Yeouido, Banpo, and Ttukseom are excellent places to experience how Seoul residents enjoy autumn.
One of the most popular local experiences is cooking instant ramen at a Hangang convenience store and eating it beside the river. It is simple, affordable, and far more memorable than it may sound—especially when the city lights begin reflecting on the water.
If you want to combine this local food experience with one of Yeouido’s best skyline views, my guided night tour includes 63 Sky, a picnic beside the Hangang River, freshly cooked Hangang ramen, and a visit to IFC Mall.
It is designed for travelers who want to experience several sides of Yeouido in one evening without worrying about transportation or figuring everything out alone.

Remember that the river can feel noticeably colder after sunset. Bring an extra layer if you plan to stay into the evening.

October is one of Korea’s busiest festival months.
Some events focus on traditional culture, while others feature lanterns, performances, food, fireworks, or regional specialties. Many of the largest festivals take place outside Seoul, which makes them useful additions to a longer Korea itinerary.
Major autumn events include the Andong Maskdance Festival, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, Gangneung Coffee Festival, and other regional celebrations.
Instead of choosing a festival only because it appears on a long travel list, consider the transportation time and whether the event matches your interests.
I have compared the best options here:
👉 Best Autumn Festivals in Korea 2026: Where Foreigners Should Go
For a first-time visitor staying only a few days, enjoying Seoul’s palaces, parks, and neighborhoods may be more practical than spending an entire day traveling to a distant festival.
Here is a simple packing checklist:
Light jacket or windbreaker
Long-sleeved shirts
One sweater or cardigan
Comfortable walking shoes
Long pants
Compact umbrella
Sunscreen and sunglasses
Lip balm and moisturizer
Reusable water bottle
Portable phone charger
Small day bag
Any personal medication
A compact umbrella is useful even during a generally drier season. Sunscreen also remains important because clear autumn days can still have strong sunlight.
Lip balm and moisturizer may help travelers who are accustomed to humid climates, since the air usually becomes drier as autumn progresses.

Do not decide what to wear based only on the afternoon high temperature. Check the morning, daytime, and evening conditions, especially if you will be outside all day.
Popular foliage locations can become crowded on weekends. Visit early in the morning on a weekday if possible.
Google Maps can be useful for general orientation, but it is not always the most reliable tool for detailed walking routes and public transportation in Korea.
Naver Map and KakaoMap are usually more practical for navigating Seoul. If this is your first visit, read my comparison:

Seoul has countless places to buy an extra sweater, umbrella, scarf, or jacket. If the weather becomes colder than expected, neighborhoods such as Myeongdong, Hongdae, and Gangnam make it easy to purchase what you need.
Save at least one clear day for your most important outdoor destination. If rain is expected, switch to museums, shopping districts, cafés, traditional markets, or indoor attractions.
Choose October if you prefer milder weather, outdoor activities, and a better chance of comfortable evening walks.
Choose early November if your priority is stronger autumn foliage in central Seoul and you do not mind colder mornings and nights.
For many first-time visitors, late October provides the best balance. The city is visibly changing, outdoor sightseeing remains comfortable, and you may see autumn colors without needing full winter clothing.
However, nature does not follow a fixed tourism calendar. Arriving on one specific date never guarantees peak foliage everywhere.
October shows Seoul at its most walkable.
You can start the day inside a historic palace, spend the afternoon beneath changing leaves, eat dinner in a busy neighborhood, and finish the evening looking across the illuminated city from Namsan or enjoying ramen beside the Hangang River.
Pack layers, wear comfortable shoes, and do not worry too much about predicting the single perfect foliage day.
If the weather is good, go outside and explore.
The best part of Seoul in October is not only seeing red and yellow leaves. It is experiencing the city during the short season when walking feels pleasant, the air becomes crisp, and both locals and visitors want to spend as much time outdoors as possible.
