Incheon Airport to Seoul: AREX vs Bus vs Taxi—and Why a Taxi Is Not Always Fastest

Many first-time visitors assume that taking a taxi from Incheon Airport is always the fastest and easiest way to reach Seoul.

A taxi certainly offers door-to-door convenience. You can load your luggage, give the driver your hotel address and relax without making transfers. However, it is not always the fastest choice—especially if you arrive during Seoul’s afternoon or evening rush hour.

I learned how important this distinction can be through one of my own tour guests.

An Israeli guest had reserved my private Namsan night tour, which was scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. His flight arrived at Incheon International Airport at approximately 4:00 p.m. He assumed that taking a taxi directly to his hotel would give him enough time to check in and join the tour.

Unfortunately, the roads into Seoul were heavily congested.

He arrived at his hotel after 7:00 p.m. and finally joined the tour after 8:40 p.m.—more than one hour and forty minutes after the scheduled starting time.

When we eventually met, I explained that the Airport Railroad Express, commonly called AREX, would probably have been faster and much more predictable at that time of day. I also asked him, “Why didn’t you contact me before choosing your transportation?”

The lesson is simple: the most comfortable option is not necessarily the fastest, and your flight’s landing time is not the same as your arrival time in Seoul.

Here is how to choose between AREX, an airport limousine bus and a taxi when traveling from Incheon Airport to Seoul.

First, Do Not Plan from Your Flight’s Landing Time

If your flight is scheduled to land at 4:00 p.m., that does not mean you will leave the airport at 4:00 p.m.

After landing, you still need to:

• Taxi to the gate

• Walk or take the airport shuttle to immigration

• Complete immigration procedures

• Collect checked luggage

• Pass through customs

• Buy a transportation ticket or card

• Find the AREX station, bus platform or taxi stand

Under smooth conditions, this may take around one hour. On a busy day, it can take considerably longer.

A flight landing at 4:00 p.m. may therefore mean leaving the terminal between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. From there, you still need to travel to Seoul, reach your hotel, check in and move to the starting point of your evening activity.

For this reason, I recommend allowing at least four to five hours between your scheduled landing time and an important dinner reservation, performance or guided tour in central Seoul. Allow even more time if you are traveling with children, elderly family members or several large suitcases.

Quick Comparison: AREX, Airport Bus or Taxi?

Travel times and fares can change. Always check the official operator’s current information before departure.

Option 1: AREX Express—The Most Predictable Choice

The AREX Express Train travels nonstop between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station.

The published journey time is approximately:

• 43 minutes from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station

• 51 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station

The train has reserved seating and dedicated luggage storage. Because it runs on railway tracks, its journey time is not affected by road congestion, rain or rush-hour traffic.

This is why I often recommend the Express Train to travelers who have an evening reservation or tour shortly after arriving in Korea.

However, the Express Train only takes you to Seoul Station. You may still need to transfer to the subway, take a short taxi ride or walk to your hotel. If your hotel is in Myeongdong, for example, you can transfer to Subway Line 4 at Seoul Station or take a taxi for the final section.

The transfer inside Seoul Station can involve long corridors, escalators and elevators. Travelers with several large suitcases should include extra transfer time.

Choose the AREX Express when:

• You want the most predictable airport-to-city journey

• You are staying near Seoul Station, Myeongdong or central Seoul

• You have an appointment or tour later that day

• You prefer a reserved seat and luggage space

• You are arriving during afternoon or evening rush hour

Do not confuse the two AREX services

At the airport, you will see signs for both the Express Train and the All-Stop Train. They use different ticketing areas.

The Express Train runs nonstop to Seoul Station and requires a separate ticket. A standard Tmoney card cannot be used as the Express Train ticket.

Option 2: AREX All-Stop Train—Cheaper and Better for Hongdae

The AREX All-Stop Train operates like a normal subway service. It stops at stations including Gimpo International Airport, Digital Media City, Hongik University, Gongdeok and Seoul Station.

Traveling from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station takes approximately 59 minutes. From Terminal 2, it takes approximately 66 minutes, although some services may take a few minutes longer.

The All-Stop Train is much cheaper than the Express Train and can be used with a standard transportation card.

It may actually be the better option if you are staying in:

• Hongdae

• Gongdeok

• Digital Media City

• Areas connected to Subway Lines 2, 5, 6 or 9

For example, travelers staying in Hongdae do not need to travel all the way to Seoul Station and return. They can simply get off at Hongik University Station.

The disadvantages are that seats are not reserved, the train makes multiple stops and it can become crowded. Carrying several suitcases on a busy commuter-style train may be uncomfortable.

Option 3: Airport Limousine Bus—Convenient for the Right Hotel

Airport limousine buses connect Incheon Airport with major hotels and neighborhoods throughout Seoul.

Unlike AREX, a limousine bus can take you close to your accommodation without a difficult subway transfer. Most buses have storage compartments underneath, making them convenient for travelers with large suitcases.

For example, bus 6015 serves areas including Mapo, Gongdeok, Namdaemun, Euljiro, Chungmuro and Myeongdong. As of October 2026, the adult fare for route 6015 is KRW 17,000.

The important disadvantage is traffic.

Official guidance generally estimates 60 to 80 minutes for an airport bus journey, but the actual time can be much longer during rush hour, bad weather, an accident or a major event in Seoul.

Choose the airport bus when:

• A bus stop is very close to your hotel

• You have large luggage and want to avoid subway transfers

• You are not in a hurry

• You want a seat and direct access to your neighborhood

• You are traveling outside the busiest traffic hours

Before buying a ticket, search for your hotel’s exact name and nearest airport bus stop. Do not assume that a bus marked “Myeongdong” will stop directly in front of every Myeongdong hotel.

Tickets can be purchased at the airport bus ticket counters. Boarding platforms differ between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, so confirm the platform number printed on your ticket.

Option 4: Taxi—The Most Comfortable, but Not Always the Fastest

A taxi is the easiest option for door-to-door travel. It is especially useful when:

• Three or four people are sharing the fare

• You have children or elderly family members

• You are carrying several large suitcases

• Your hotel is far from an AREX station or airport bus stop

• You arrive after regular train and bus services have ended

• You have mobility limitations

But a taxi is vulnerable to traffic from the moment it leaves the airport.

Official estimates for a taxi from Incheon Airport to Myeongdong are approximately 80 to 90 minutes under typical conditions. Journeys to Dongdaemun, Namsan and parts of Gangnam can take 80 to 100 minutes or longer.

Regular taxi fares vary by destination and traffic. Travelers should also expect the Incheon Airport Expressway toll to be added. Late-night surcharges or different vehicle types can increase the total price further.

A taxi may be faster late at night when roads are clear. At 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. on a weekday, however, AREX will often provide a more reliable arrival time.

This was exactly the problem experienced by my Israeli tour guest. The taxi was comfortable, but it could not escape Seoul’s evening congestion.

If he had contacted me before leaving the airport, I would have recommended taking AREX to Seoul Station and then using the subway or a short taxi ride for the final part of the journey.

Best Option by Destination

Seoul Station

Take the AREX Express if speed and predictability matter. Take the All-Stop Train if saving money is more important than saving approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Hongdae

The AREX All-Stop Train is usually the most practical option because it stops at Hongik University Station. The Express Train does not stop there.

Myeongdong

During rush hour, take the AREX Express to Seoul Station, then transfer to Subway Line 4 or take a short taxi ride. If your hotel is directly beside a 6015 bus stop and you are not in a hurry, the airport bus can be easier with luggage.

Insadong, Jongno or Bukchon

The airport bus may be convenient if it stops near your accommodation. Otherwise, take AREX and transfer at Seoul Station, Gongdeok or another suitable station depending on your hotel.

Gangnam

There is no single best answer. An airport bus can be convenient if it stops close to your hotel, while a taxi is comfortable for groups. During rush hour, a rail journey followed by a subway transfer may provide a more predictable arrival time.

Seoul Station is the final stop for both the AREX Express and All-Stop Train. Travelers can transfer to Subway Lines 1 and 4, KTX trains and local taxis here.

What to Do After Reaching Seoul

After reaching your hotel, do not underestimate the time needed to check in, organize your luggage and travel to your next destination.

Seoul subway stations can be much larger than they appear on a map. Choosing the correct exit is important because opposite exits may place you several blocks away from your destination.

Arriving Today? Ask Your Guide Before Choosing

If you have booked a tour, performance or restaurant on the day you arrive, contact the host or guide before choosing your airport transportation.

Tell them:

• Your scheduled landing time

• Your arrival terminal

• Whether you have checked luggage

• Your hotel name

• Your next reservation time

• How many people are traveling

• How many suitcases you have

A local guide can often tell you whether a train, bus or taxi is the safest choice for your specific schedule.

However, please leave enough time between your flight and the tour. A 4:00 p.m. landing does not guarantee that you will be ready in central Seoul by 7:00 p.m.

My Final Recommendation

There is no single best way to travel from Incheon Airport to Seoul.

Choose the AREX Express when you need speed, predictability and a comfortable reserved seat.

Choose the AREX All-Stop Train when you want the lowest price or are staying near Hongdae, Gongdeok or another station along the route.

Choose an airport limousine bus when it stops close to your hotel and avoiding transfers is more important than arriving at an exact time.

Choose a taxi when door-to-door convenience, group travel or heavy luggage matters most—but do not assume that it will always be the fastest.

Most importantly, plan from the time you can realistically leave the airport, not the time printed as your flight’s arrival.

A little planning before leaving Incheon Airport can save you money, reduce stress and prevent the first evening of your Seoul trip from disappearing in traffic.
