Myeongdong vs Hongdae: Where to Stay in Seoul for Your First Trip

Choosing a hotel in Seoul is not only about finding a comfortable room at the right price. Your neighborhood can change the entire rhythm of your trip.

Two of the most popular choices for first-time visitors are Myeongdong and Hongdae. Both areas have plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops and convenient public transportation. However, they offer very different experiences.

Myeongdong is in central Seoul, close to Namsan, royal palaces, traditional markets and many of the city’s major attractions. Hongdae is younger, more energetic and directly connected to Incheon International Airport by the AREX All-Stop Train.

So, which area should you choose?

The short answer is:

  • Choose Myeongdong for a convenient first visit focused on sightseeing, shopping and central Seoul.

  • Choose Hongdae for direct airport access, nightlife, cafés and a younger atmosphere.

The better answer depends on your arrival time, itinerary, travel companions and how you want your evenings in Seoul to feel.

Myeongdong: Best for a Classic First Trip to Seoul

Myeongdong is one of the easiest areas for first-time visitors to understand.

It is located in central Seoul and provides relatively convenient access to Namsan Seoul Tower, Namdaemun Market, City Hall, Deoksugung Palace, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Insadong and the Gyeongbokgung area.

Myeongdong Station is on Subway Line 4. Euljiro 1-ga Station, on Line 2, is also within walking distance of many hotels in the northern part of the neighborhood. This gives travelers more transportation choices than the name “Myeongdong Station” alone may suggest.

The area is especially convenient for visitors who want to spend their first trip seeing Seoul’s major landmarks rather than traveling across the city every day.

Reasons to stay in Myeongdong

  • Many major attractions are nearby

  • Numerous hotels are accustomed to international guests

  • Shopping, restaurants and street food are easy to find

  • Namsan and Namdaemun Market are within walking distance of some hotels

  • Airport limousine buses serve several nearby stops

  • It is a practical starting point for palace and traditional neighborhood tours

Myeongdong also remains active after sunset. Shops, restaurants and street-food stalls create a lively atmosphere without requiring visitors to enter a club or bar.

To understand why Seoul’s evenings offer much more than a conventional party scene, read Why Seoul’s Nightlife Is Topping Global Travel Charts.

The disadvantages of Myeongdong

Myeongdong is heavily oriented toward visitors. If you want a quiet residential neighborhood or a less tourist-focused experience, it may feel commercial.

The main shopping streets can also become crowded, especially in the evening and on weekends. Hotels directly beside busy streets may experience more pedestrian noise than properties located a few blocks away.

Most importantly, a hotel advertised as being “in Myeongdong” may not actually be close to Myeongdong Station. It could be closer to Euljiro, Chungmuro or City Hall.

Always check the exact hotel location, nearest subway station and walking distance to the correct station exit before booking.

Myeongdong Station is served by Subway Line 4. Before booking a hotel, check whether the property is actually closer to Myeongdong Station, Euljiro 1-ga Station or Chungmuro Station.

Hongdae: Best for Airport Access and a Younger Atmosphere

Hongdae developed around Hongik University and is known for fashion, music, art, nightlife and youth culture.

The greater Hongdae area extends beyond one street. It connects naturally with Yeonnam-dong, Hapjeong, Sangsu and Sinchon, giving visitors access to cafés, independent shops, restaurants, bars and performance spaces.

Hongik University Station is one of the area’s biggest advantages. It is served by:

  • Subway Line 2

  • AREX All-Stop Train

  • Gyeongui–Jungang Line

The direct AREX connection makes Hongdae particularly attractive to international travelers arriving at Incheon Airport. You can take the All-Stop Train from either airport terminal and get off at Hongik University Station without traveling all the way to Seoul Station.

For a complete introduction to what to see and do in the area, read The Ultimate Hongdae Guide: Exploring Seoul’s Vibrant Hub of Youth, Fashion, and Nightlife.

Reasons to stay in Hongdae

  • Direct access from Incheon Airport on the AREX All-Stop Train

  • Excellent connection to other areas through Subway Line 2

  • Many guesthouses, hostels and budget accommodations

  • Active nightlife and late-night dining

  • Easy access to Yeonnam, Mangwon, Hapjeong and Sinchon

  • A social atmosphere for solo travelers and younger visitors

Hongdae can also be a good base for travelers who plan to spend time in western Seoul. Mangwon Market, the World Cup Stadium area and the Hangang parks on the western side of the city are relatively accessible.

The disadvantages of Hongdae

Hongdae is not the most convenient base for every itinerary.

If most of your plans involve Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon, Insadong, Namsan or other parts of central historic Seoul, you will spend more time taking the subway.

The busiest parts of Hongdae can also be noisy late at night. A hotel or guesthouse near clubs and main nightlife streets may not be suitable for families, light sleepers or travelers who prefer quiet evenings.

Travelers who like the general Hongdae area but want a calmer atmosphere should consider Yeonnam-dong or the streets farther from the main nightlife zone. However, they should still check the real walking distance to Hongik University Station.

Hongik University Station is large, and the distance between an AREX platform, a subway platform and a particular exit can add significant walking time.

Hongik University Station connects Subway Line 2, the AREX All-Stop Train and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. Check the exact exit closest to your accommodation because the station and surrounding area are extensive.

Which Area Is Better from Incheon Airport?

For the simplest rail journey, Hongdae wins.

The AREX All-Stop Train travels directly from Incheon Airport to Hongik University Station. Travelers staying near the station can avoid a subway transfer.

Myeongdong requires more planning. The common options include:

  1. Take the AREX Express or All-Stop Train to Seoul Station and transfer to Subway Line 4.

  2. Take an airport limousine bus that stops near your hotel.

  3. Take a taxi directly from the airport.

A taxi offers door-to-door convenience, but it is not always the fastest option during Seoul’s rush hour. Road congestion can turn what looks like a simple journey into a long and unpredictable trip.

Before deciding, read Incheon Airport to Seoul: AREX vs Bus vs Taxi—and Why a Taxi Is Not Always Fastest.

If you land late in the afternoon and have an important reservation that evening, Hongdae’s direct train connection may provide a more predictable arrival. However, if your entire sightseeing itinerary is centered on historic Seoul, spending a little more time reaching Myeongdong on the first day may save you time throughout the rest of your trip.

Which Area Is Better for Sightseeing?

For a typical first-time itinerary, Myeongdong has the advantage.

From Myeongdong, travelers can reach Namsan, Namdaemun Market, City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon and Insadong relatively easily.

Hongdae is still well connected, but reaching these locations generally requires more subway travel.

Travelers interested in Korean history and traditional neighborhoods can join a private Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon and Insadong walking tour through GetYourGuide or view the same private experience on Viator.

Both Myeongdong and Hongdae are workable starting points, but Myeongdong reduces travel time for this traditional central-Seoul route.

Which Area Is Better at Night?

This depends on what you mean by nightlife.

Choose Hongdae if you want:

  • Clubs and bars

  • Street performances

  • Late-night restaurants

  • Younger crowds

  • A lively social environment

Choose Myeongdong if you prefer:

  • Evening shopping

  • Street food

  • Namsan night views

  • Walking through central Seoul

  • A lively atmosphere without clubbing

Visitors staying in Myeongdong can explore the area with my private Namsan Tower and Myeongdong night walking tour.

The experience combines the Namsan evening view with a walk through Myeongdong and local street food. It is a private tour rather than a large group or bus tour, so the pace can be adjusted to the guests.

Which Area Is Better for Families?

For most first-time family trips, I would choose Myeongdong.

Its central location can reduce long subway journeys, and many sightseeing attractions are relatively close. Families planning to visit palaces, Namsan and traditional markets may find the area more efficient.

However, families arriving with several suitcases should carefully check the hotel’s distance from a subway elevator or airport bus stop. A location that looks close on a map may involve stairs, underground passages or a difficult station transfer.

Hongdae can still work well for families, especially if they prioritize easy airport access. The key is to avoid accommodation directly beside nightlife streets and choose a quieter section near Yeonnam-dong or a residential side street.

Which Area Is Better for Solo Travelers?

Hongdae is often the stronger choice for solo travelers who want to meet people.

The area has numerous hostels, guesthouses, shared lounges and social activities. Cafés and restaurants stay open late, and the streets remain active well into the evening.

Myeongdong may be better for a solo traveler who prioritizes simple sightseeing, central transportation and familiarity over social nightlife.

Budget-conscious travelers should read How to Find and Book the Best Guesthouses in Korea: Updated 2026 Guide for Travelers before making a reservation.

The guide explains how to compare guesthouses, avoid misleading listings and choose between dormitory beds, private rooms, K-guesthouses and traditional accommodation.

What About Gangnam, Seongsu and Other Areas?

Myeongdong and Hongdae are not the only places to stay in Seoul.

Gangnam may suit business travelers, luxury shoppers and visitors whose plans are mainly south of the Hangang River. However, it can be inconvenient if most of your sightseeing is around the northern palaces and traditional districts.

Learn more in Beyond the Song: Why Gangnam Is Seoul’s Ultimate Futuristic and Luxury Hub.

Seongsu-dong is popular for cafés, fashion, pop-up stores and industrial-style spaces. It is a great neighborhood to visit, although it may not be the most convenient base for a first trip covering all of Seoul.

Read The Seongsu-dong Aesthetic: Inside Seoul’s Coolest Industrial-Chic Neighborhood for a closer look.

Jongno and Insadong are also good choices for travelers who prioritize palaces, hanok neighborhoods and traditional culture. Seoul Station can be practical for airport and KTX connections, while Dongdaemun may suit shoppers and visitors attending events near DDP.

The right neighborhood is not necessarily the most famous one. It is the one that reduces travel time to the places you actually plan to visit.

Three Things to Check Before Booking

1. Check the exact subway exit

Do not rely only on the station name. Large Seoul stations may have many exits, and walking from the wrong exit can add considerable time.

My Seoul Subway Guide 2026 explains transfers, station exits, express trains and last-train issues that often confuse first-time visitors.

2. Measure walking distance with luggage

A ten-minute walk may feel very different when pulling two large suitcases over uneven pavement. Check whether the route includes stairs, hills or major intersections.

3. Check the last part of your airport journey

A direct airport train is useful only if your accommodation is reasonably close to the station. A hotel beside an airport bus stop may be easier than a hotel that requires several rail transfers.

Google Maps can help you view locations, but route guidance in South Korea may not always work as expected. Read my KakaoMap and Kakao T Guide for Foreigners before arriving.

Final Verdict: Myeongdong or Hongdae?

Choose Myeongdong if:

  • This is your first trip to Seoul

  • Palaces, traditional markets and major landmarks are priorities

  • You want central sightseeing and evening shopping

  • You are traveling with family

  • You prefer a convenient tourism base

Choose Hongdae if:

  • Direct AREX airport access is important

  • You enjoy nightlife, cafés and youthful culture

  • You are a solo traveler or backpacker

  • You want a guesthouse or hostel

  • You plan to explore western Seoul

If I were advising a first-time visitor planning a classic three- or four-day sightseeing itinerary, I would generally recommend Myeongdong.

If the traveler were younger, traveling alone, arriving with the AREX and more interested in nightlife and cafés, I would recommend Hongdae.

Neither neighborhood is automatically better. The best choice is the one that fits your arrival plan, daily itinerary and preferred evenings.

Choose the area first, then check the precise station exit, walking route and airport connection before booking your room. That small amount of planning can save hours of unnecessary travel during your stay in Seoul.
