Cheap Places to Stay in Seoul: Affordable Hotels, Hostels and Guesthouses
Finding cheap places to stay in Seoul is not difficult. Finding accommodation that is inexpensive, clean, convenient, and suitable for your trip requires more careful research.
Seoul has hostels, guesthouses, small private rooms, business hotels, residences, hanok stays, and international hotel chains. A room may look extremely cheap on a booking website, but the price alone does not tell you whether it is good value.
The property may be far from a subway station. It may be located on a steep hill, have no elevator, charge extra for towels, or require an expensive taxi after the last train. Some rooms have no window, and some “double rooms” are much smaller than foreign travelers expect.
As a licensed Korean tour guide living in Seoul, I often meet visitors who choose accommodation according to the lowest nightly price. After arriving, they discover that the location makes every day more difficult.
The most affordable Seoul accommodation is not always the room with the lowest price. It is the room that keeps your total travel expenses low without wasting your time.
This is Part 3 of the Korea for Less series.

How Much Does Cheap Accommodation in Seoul Cost?
Accommodation prices change according to the date, neighborhood, room type, booking conditions, and events taking place in Seoul.
As a broad planning range, travelers may find:
| Accommodation type | General nightly range |
|---|---|
| Hostel dormitory bed | ₩25,000–₩50,000 |
| Small guesthouse room | ₩50,000–₩100,000 |
| Simple private room | ₩50,000–₩110,000 |
| Cheap or business hotel | ₩70,000–₩140,000 |
| Central standard hotel | ₩120,000 and above |
These are not guaranteed prices. A room may cost much more during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, major concerts, international events, weekends, and Korean holidays.
The same hotel may also show different prices according to:
- Refundable or non-refundable booking
- Breakfast inclusion
- Number of guests
- Taxes and service charges
- Room with or without a window
- Shared or private bathroom
- Weekday or weekend
- Length of stay
- Payment timing
Always compare the final price, not only the number shown in the first search result.
1. Hostel Dormitories: Usually the Cheapest Choice
A dormitory bed is often the cheapest accommodation in Seoul for one traveler.
Hostels can also provide:
- A shared kitchen
- Common areas
- Laundry facilities
- Luggage storage
- Travel information
- Opportunities to meet other travelers
They are popular with young solo travelers and people staying in Korea for longer periods.
However, check the dormitory conditions carefully.
Confirm:
- Number of beds in the room
- Mixed or female-only dormitory
- Privacy curtains
- Personal locker
- Shared bathroom location
- Quiet hours
- Towel availability
- Luggage storage
- Elevator access
- Maximum check-in time
A cheap bed in a 12-person dormitory may not be suitable for a light sleeper. A smaller dormitory can cost slightly more but provide a much better night’s rest.
Check recent reviews for noise, cleanliness, heating, air conditioning, showers, and locker security. Reviews from several years ago may not reflect the property’s current condition.
2. Guesthouses: Affordable and More Personal
A Seoul guesthouse can offer a more personal experience than a large hotel.
Guesthouses range from small family-operated properties to modern accommodations that are almost identical to hostels or small hotels.
Possible advantages include:
- Private rooms at reasonable prices
- Local hosts
- Shared kitchens
- Laundry facilities
- Longer-stay discounts
- Luggage storage
- A quieter atmosphere than a large hostel
The term “guesthouse” does not guarantee a traditional Korean experience. Some are located in ordinary buildings, while others are renovated hanok houses.
A hanok guesthouse may look beautiful, but travelers should understand what the experience involves. Traditional-style rooms may use floor bedding, have thinner walls, smaller bathrooms, and limited soundproofing.

3. Cheap Hotels and Business Hotels
Travelers who want a private bathroom, reception service, and more privacy may prefer a cheap hotel or business hotel.
Small Korean business hotels can offer good value, particularly in areas such as Jongno, Euljiro, Dongdaemun, and around transportation hubs.
Do not rely only on the word “hotel.”
Check:
- Room size
- Window availability
- Bed size
- Private bathroom
- Heating and air conditioning
- Reception hours
- Daily cleaning
- Luggage storage
- Elevator
- Non-smoking room availability
Some inexpensive properties use the word “hotel” even though their facilities and service are closer to a motel or short-stay accommodation.
This does not automatically make them unsafe or unsuitable. However, the atmosphere may differ from what an international traveler expects from a standard tourist hotel.
Look at recent guest photographs, not only professional property images.
Where to Stay in Seoul for Cheap
The best area depends on what you plan to do.
A room in the correct neighborhood can reduce daily transportation, avoid unnecessary transfers, and make it easier to return after shopping or sightseeing.
Hongdae: Good for Airport Access and Young Travelers
Hongdae has many hostels, guesthouses, private rooms, and small hotels.
It is popular with:
- Solo travelers
- Younger visitors
- Nightlife travelers
- Café lovers
- Visitors arriving through Incheon Airport
Hongik University Station connects directly to the Airport Railroad All-Stop Train. This can make arrival and departure easier for travelers with luggage.
Hongdae also has inexpensive restaurants, late-night food, shops, and free street entertainment.
The disadvantage is noise. A room near clubs, bars, or the busiest streets may remain loud late at night. Travelers who want a quieter stay can check Yeonnam-dong, Hapjeong, or side streets outside the nightlife center.
Sinchon: A More Affordable Alternative Near Hongdae
Sinchon is close to Hongdae but generally feels more local and student-oriented.
The neighborhood has:
- University-area restaurants
- Casual cafés
- Guesthouses
- Small hotels
- Good subway access
- Lower-cost everyday meals
It can be a practical choice for longer stays or travelers who want access to Hongdae without sleeping in the busiest nightlife area.
However, Sinchon is not directly connected to Incheon Airport by AREX. Check the transfer required from your property.
Jongno: Excellent for Palaces and Traditional Seoul
Jongno is one of the best-value areas for travelers interested in:
- Gyeongbokgung Palace
- Changdeokgung Palace
- Bukchon
- Insadong
- Ikseon-dong
- Jogyesa Temple
- Gwangjang Market
- Cheonggyecheon Stream
Staying in the correct part of Jongno allows you to walk to several major attractions.
That reduces both subway expenses and travel time. Jongno also has local restaurants, traditional food streets, guesthouses, simple hotels, and some hanok accommodation.
The district is large, so check the exact station and exit. A property described only as “Jongno” may not be within walking distance of every palace or attraction.
Dongdaemun: Practical Hotels and Strong Transportation
Dongdaemun offers budget hotels, business hotels, shopping, markets, and access to several subway lines.
It can be useful for travelers visiting:
- Dongdaemun Design Plaza
- Gwangjang Market
- Cheonggyecheon
- Eastern Seoul
- Late-night shopping areas
The exact location matters. Properties advertised as being in the Dongdaemun area may be near Dongdaemun Station, Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station, or farther away in another neighborhood.
Check the station name rather than trusting the district name alone.
Euljiro: Central but Often Less Expensive Than Myeongdong
Euljiro is located between several major sightseeing and shopping areas.
Depending on the exact location, visitors can reach:
- Myeongdong
- Jongno
- Cheonggyecheon
- Gwangjang Market
- Dongdaemun
The area includes office buildings, printing alleys, old restaurants, fashionable bars, and small hotels.
Some streets are quiet or industrial-looking at night, while other sections are filled with restaurants and bars. Check recent street photographs and the walking route from the subway station.
Myeongdong: Not the Cheapest, but Sometimes the Best Value
Myeongdong is often more expensive than Hongdae, Sinchon, or parts of Jongno.
However, it may still be a sensible choice for a short first trip.
Myeongdong offers:
- Central location
- Shopping
- K-beauty stores
- Restaurants
- Access to Namsan
- Access to Namdaemun Market
- Subway connections
- Airport limousine buses
A room that costs slightly more may allow you to walk to several places and return easily with shopping bags.

Seoul Station: Useful for Airport and KTX Connections
Seoul Station can be practical if you:
- Arrive or depart through Incheon Airport
- Plan to use KTX
- Stay in Seoul for only one night
- Have an early train
- Travel with heavy luggage
It is more of a transportation base than a neighborhood experience.
Also check which side of Seoul Station the accommodation is on. The station is large, and crossing it with luggage may take longer than expected.

Check the Real Walking Route from the Subway
A property may claim to be “five minutes from the subway.”
That description does not explain:
- Which exit you should use
- Whether the exit has an elevator
- Whether the route has stairs
- Whether the property is uphill
- Whether the walk crosses a major road
- Whether the entrance is difficult to find
- Whether five minutes is realistic with luggage
Seoul subway stations can be very large. Walking inside the station from the platform to the correct exit may take several additional minutes.
Use a Korean navigation app to check the exact walking route. Google Maps can show the general location, but Naver Map or KakaoMap is normally more useful for walking and public transportation directions in Korea.
For travelers carrying large luggage, an elevator near the correct exit may be more valuable than saving a small amount on the room.
Do Not Ignore the Arrival Time
A cheap room may have limited reception hours.
Before booking, check:
- Earliest check-in time
- Latest check-in time
- Self-check-in instructions
- Door access code
- Staff availability
- Late-arrival policy
- Luggage storage before check-in
If your flight arrives in the evening, allow time for immigration, baggage collection, transportation, and finding the property.
A room is not a good deal if you cannot enter it after arriving.
Also compare your airport transportation before choosing the neighborhood:

Check Whether the Room Has a Window
Some cheap hotel rooms in Seoul have no outside window.
The listing may use expressions such as:
- No window
- Interior room
- Economy room
- Basement room
- Semi-basement
- City view unavailable
A room without a window can be acceptable for one night, especially if you only need a bed before an early train or flight.
For a longer stay, a lack of daylight and ventilation may become uncomfortable.
Do not assume that every private room includes an outside window.
Understand Korean Bathrooms
Many small guesthouses and inexpensive hotels use a wet-room bathroom.
The shower, toilet, and sink are located together without a separate shower enclosure. The bathroom floor becomes wet when you shower.
This is common in compact Korean accommodation and does not automatically indicate poor quality.
Check photographs for:
- Shower separation
- Drainage
- Ventilation
- Towels
- Toiletries
- Hot-water reviews
- Bathroom cleanliness
If a separated shower is important to you, confirm it before booking.
Look at the Newest Negative Reviews
High ratings can be useful, but do not stop at the average score.
Read recent negative reviews and look for repeated complaints.
One angry review may reflect a misunderstanding. Ten recent reviews mentioning the same problem deserve attention.
Watch for repeated reports about:
- Bedbugs
- Mold
- Cigarette smell
- Street noise
- Poor soundproofing
- Cold rooms
- Weak air conditioning
- Dirty bathrooms
- No elevator
- Unresponsive staff
- Difficult check-in
- Misleading photographs
Also check who wrote the review. A solo traveler, family, couple, and business traveler may judge the same property differently.
Check Laundry and Luggage Storage
Laundry can become an important cost during a longer trip.
A property with a washing machine may allow you to pack fewer clothes and avoid paying for extra baggage. However, check whether detergent, drying, and machine use cost extra.
If your accommodation does not provide laundry, Korea has many unattended coin laundries.

Also confirm whether the property stores luggage:
- Before check-in
- After check-out
- Overnight
- Without an extra charge
Do not assume every small guesthouse has a secure storage room.

Compare the Final Price
Booking platforms may show different totals for the same property.
Before paying, confirm:
- Taxes
- Service charges
- Cleaning fees
- Payment fees
- Breakfast
- Towels
- Late check-in fees
- Laundry
- Luggage storage
- Cancellation conditions
- Currency-conversion charges
A private rental with a low nightly price may add a cleaning fee at checkout. For a short stay, that fee can make a small hotel or guesthouse cheaper.
Also confirm whether the price is for:
- One person
- Two people
- One bed
- One room
- The entire apartment
The wording can be confusing when switching between booking platforms.
Should You Book a Non-Refundable Room?
A non-refundable price may be cheaper, but it carries more risk.
Consider a refundable booking if:
- Your visa is not confirmed
- Your flight may change
- You are still planning the itinerary
- You have not decided which Seoul area is best
- You are traveling during uncertain weather
- You are using separate flight tickets
A slightly higher refundable rate may be more affordable than losing the entire accommodation payment after a change.
Always check the cancellation deadline in Korean time, not only your home time zone.
Local Guide Checklist for Cheap Seoul Accommodation
Before booking, check:
- Is the final price affordable after all fees?
- Is the property near the subway?
- Is the walking route flat and practical?
- Does the correct subway exit have an elevator?
- Is the neighborhood suitable for your itinerary?
- Can you reach the property from the airport?
- Can you check in after your arrival time?
- Does the room have a window?
- Is the bathroom private or shared?
- Is there an elevator in the building?
- Are recent reviews positive?
- Do several reviews mention the same problem?
- Is luggage storage available?
- Is laundry available?
- Is the booking refundable?
- Will the location reduce or increase transportation costs?
What Is the Best Cheap Area to Stay in Seoul?
There is no single best area for everyone.
- Choose Hongdae for airport access, hostels, nightlife, and younger energy.
- Choose Sinchon for student-area prices and a more local atmosphere.
- Choose Jongno for palaces, markets, and walkable cultural sightseeing.
- Choose Dongdaemun for practical hotels, shopping, and subway connections.
- Choose Euljiro for a central location between major districts.
- Choose Myeongdong when convenience is worth paying slightly more.
- Choose Seoul Station for AREX, KTX, or a short transit stay.
Cheap accommodation in Seoul should reduce the total difficulty and expense of your trip.
A low room price is useful. A low room price in the correct location is much better.
